Eat for Beauty – Pumpkin Seeds


Looking for a quick and healthy snack with beautifying properties? Pumpkin seeds are an excellent source of B vitamins, magnesium, zinc (as well as other minerals) and essential fatty oils. Essential fatty oils, such as omega-3, help to produce clear, bright skin, and protect the skin from sun damage.

It is said that all pumpkin and squash seeds are edible. Some grow in shells, while others do not. Pumpkin seeds, also known as “pepitas”, can be found at most grocery or health food stores. They are relatively affordable. Raw pumpkin seeds have a buttery, slightly earthy taste to them. They can be very delicious.

A bonus? Raw pumpkin seeds contain an amino acid called tryptophan that increases serotonin in the brain, thus helping those who suffer from anxiety and/or insomnia. I can attest to this. I try to consume a couple handfuls of raw pumpkin seeds daily. When I do, it stabilizes my mood, much like 5-HTP (a popular depression/anxiety-treating supplement) would.
